“An elaborate act of bullshit.” That’s Urban Dictionary’s primary definition of “dog and pony show” — a presentation high on style but low in content. It’s a phrase that has been associated with advertising professionals for almost a century. And for that, you have my ancestors to thank. You see, in the late 1880's, four Gentry brothers from Bloomington, Indiana, formed a circus they named "Gentry's Equine and Canine Paradox". They then set out across America, performing in smaller towns and rural areas that the big circuses of the day overlooked. Problem was, their advertising depicted things their audience would never actually see. No wonder I felt drawn to this career. It’s in my DNA. And as for those dogs and ponies, I’m making amends for that, one ad at a time.
